If you’ve put off trying modern calligraphy, those excuses won’t hold up any more!

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you why your handwriting has NOTHING to do with how you do calligraphy and why fancy tools are not necessary. It really doesn’t take as long as you think to learn calligraphy!

Myth #1: You can’t do calligraphy if your handwriting sucks.

Ok, this one is just NOT TRUE AT ALL. Handwriting has absolutely NOTHING to do with your calligraphy skills.

Case in point ⬇

Myth #2: You need expensive and fancy tools to do proper calligraphy.

Of course you can spend tons of money on calligraphy and art supplies (you betchya I have!), but you DON’T HAVE to.

You can literally start with whatever you have.

My best recommendation is to start with one pen and that would be the Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen. However, even if you don’t have access to brush pens or other “calligraphy tools,” you can literally just start with a pencil! ✏️

Check out Beginners Guide To Doing Calligraphy with a Pencil for a step-by-step tutorial on using a pencil to learn modern calligraphy.

Myth #3: Calligraphy takes a really long time to learn.

Ummm, I got preeetttttyyy good at calligraphy within just the first 2 or 3 months and was being asked to teach it within just 6 months!

This is totally NOT to toot my own horn and say that I was a professional, but I was definitely good in the impress-your-friends-and-family way, for sure!

The key is to learn to do it properly.

We’re not looking for some willy nilly fancy pens here, and trying all of the new techniques; it’s about learning the basics!!

Speaking of learning the basics…

My FREE calligraphy basics course, ShowMeYourDrills, is starting again soon. I love to teach SMYD because it’s no bells and whistles, just the basics you need to know as a beginner.

Over 50,000 students have taken my getting started with calligraphy course. It’s totally free, and I promise I’ll get you off the ground a lot faster than you think!

I‘m doing the drills, really like the print outs but, am not progressing like I‘d like! And, although on your advice I own the twin Fudosoke‘s I still like my pencil, & can thick, thin strokes with them, & my dip pen.

Tell me what you thought!
