I just received a package from Fuumuui! I first discovered Fuumuui at Workshop Week this year when one of our instructors, Chao, introduced me to their supplies. They generously donated some prizes for the event, and I got to try their travel watercolour set – which I immediately became obsessed with. I’ve been using it constantly since then, filling up pages and burning through the paints faster than expected. So when they reached out and offered to send me some refills, I obviously said yes.

What’s in the box?
Since I’ve been using the travel set so much, I asked for refill paper and replacement paint pans. They sent those, plus a few extras. There’s a set of face painting brushes (I’ve been getting into face painting recently), and they also sent me the new purple version of their travel set. Honestly, this travel kit is brilliant – it has everything you need in one compact package. The paints, a double-ended brush, paper, a water pot, and clips to hold it all together. I’m planning to do a full review of it at some point because I really didn’t expect to love it as much as I do.
The main item in this box is a full 24-colour set of their opaque watercolours. Given how much I love the paints in the travel set, I was excited to try the full-size pans.
Swatching the 24-Colour Set
I wasn’t planning to test these out right away, but I couldn’t resist. The brush that comes with the set has two ends – a size 10 and a size 1. I used the size 10 to swatch all the colours, doing a highly pigmented stripe on one side and a watered-down version on the other to see the full range.
The colour selection is really lovely. I tend to prefer a limited palette that includes plenty of the colours I actually use – different greens, blues, and pinks for painting flowers – and this set hits that mark. There’s a good ochre brown, a bright gamboge yellow, malachite green, and a solid range across the spectrum.
What Makes These Paints Different
I’ve mentioned this before, but Fuumuui’s paints feel different from a lot of pan watercolours I’ve used. They’re softer pans – almost gummy in texture – somewhere between gouache and traditional watercolour. A lot of pan sets I’ve tried feel too hard, and I have to add a lot of water to get anything going. These activate much more easily and feel more fluid to work with.
They call them opaque watercolours, which doesn’t mean you can’t layer them or dilute them like regular watercolours – you absolutely can. I just find them really enjoyable to paint with. If you’re someone who doesn’t like a super hard watercolour pan, this might be a good option for you.
The brushes in the set are also quite nice. They hold a good point and have been working well for me. Several people have asked about the brushes specifically, so I wanted to mention that I’m a fan.
