I hear it all the time. “My handwriting sucks, so I could never do calligraphy.”

I get it. It’s a totally understandable assumption because calligraphy is a type of writing. People often think if you have good handwriting, you’ll automatically be good at calligraphy. And if you have bad handwriting, you’ll automatically be bad at calligraphy.

It’s such a big misconception.

Your handwriting has absolutely nothing to do with your calligraphy.

So if that’s a big reason why you haven’t given calligraphy a try yet, this post is for you.

Note: I definitely recommend taking a couple minutes to watch the full video below. It’s only two minutes long and gives you a full demonstration of what I’m talking about!

Rather watch than read? No problem! You can watch me demonstrate why handwriting doesn’t matter in real-time by clicking the video below!

Let’s Get Started!

Calligraphy is not done in the same fluid writing motion that regular handwriting is. It’s broken down into these teeny little strokes.

If I write “a, b, c, d, e, f, and g” in my handwriting, it looks like this:

If I write “a, b, c, d, e, f, and g” in calligraphy, it looks like this:

When I write in calligraphy, I lift my pen in between each stroke. The calligraphy alphabet is all broken down into these strokes. So really all you have to do to learn calligraphy is learn the strokes individually.

The strokes look like this. They’re just little pieces.

If you can learn each of these, you’ll be just as good at calligraphy as anyone else. Everyone learns from these same basics. Your handwriting comes into play exactly nowhere in this equation. Anyone can learn these strokes and put them together into pretty calligraphy letters. Make sense?

Speaking of learning calligraphy…

Seriously though – you should try it. Even if you think your handwriting sucks, I actually have a free course that takes you from the very ground up teaching you exactly how to do these strokes.

And it’s totally free, so what’s the harm in trying? Let me prove you wrong that your handwriting has nothing to do with this!

I hope to see you there!
