My most requested tutorial is always cards, and this time, I’m creating a Mother’s Day card.
This tutorial is quick. It’s easy. It doesn’t require fancy supplies. And it is easily customizable.
Supplies Used
- A card (I’m using a piece of watercolor paper folded into card shape)
- Two Markers (they do not have to be brush pens but should have a thicker tip)
- Be sure they’re contrasting colours too!
- Washi Tape

Let’s Get Started!
This is such a fun and super simple technique that literally anyone can do. You do not need any experience to do it, and it just looks so fun and cute.
Note: You can use ANY markers for this card design. I’m using Tombow Dual Brush Pens because I like the colors, but you can use any markers and any colours.
You can also use this design for any occasion – not just Mother’s Day!
Step #1: Get Your Paper Ready
Start with a full sheet of paper rather than pre-cutting your card. This makes it easier to center your design later.
Create a negative space rectangle using washi tape in the center of your paper. This will be where your message goes.

Step #2: Draw Your Lines
Draw evenly spaced horizontal lines across the entire paper using your lighter color (I used blue). Don’t worry about making them perfectly straight—the handmade look is part of the charm!
Add vertical lines in the same color, creating a grid pattern across the entire sheet. Go right over the washi tape—it’s protecting the space underneath.

Step #3: Cut your paper to card size
Using a paper cutter or scissors, cut your paper to size. The beauty of starting with a full sheet is that you can position your cuts to perfectly center your taped rectangle.

Bonus Tip: Don’t throw away your scraps!
The pieces you cut off can be used for future cards or note cards. I often keep the patterned scraps and use them for smaller projects.
Step #4: Outline Your Rectangle
Using your contrasting colour (I used red), outline your rectangle. Try to keep the line thickness consistent.
Once you’re done outlining, carefully remove the washi tape to reveal the clean white space underneath.

Step #5: Add Your Decorative Elements
Add decorative elements around the border of your rectangle. I added little circles, but you could do hearts, lines, or any design you prefer.

Step #6: Add Your Message
Write your message in the center. I simply wrote “mom” in a casual script style, but you could write any message that feels right for your recipient.

Optional Step: Add Some Extra Pop
For an extra pop, I like to go over the grid intersections with a bit more color to create darker spots where the lines cross.

And That’s a Wrap!
This versatile design can be adapted for any occasion—just change up the colors and the message in the center. It’s a perfect last-minute card that still looks thoughtful and handmade.
What I love most about this project is how accessible it is. You don’t need fancy supplies or perfect artistic skills—just a few basic materials and a little creativity!
